Double Header Sweep

Worcester, MA- The Worcester Bravehearts swept their doubleheader against the Norwich Sea Unicorns Friday, winning game one 10-0 and gametwo 5-4. With the wins, the Bravehearts move to 23-21 while the Sea 

 

Unicorns move to 20-25.

 

Game 1 - Worcester 10, Norwich 0 (F/6)

 

Bravehearts starter, Holden native, and Saint Paul alum Luke Delongchamp (Boston College) shutout Norwich and earned the win for Worcester, pitchingall six innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking 

 

out five.

 

The Bravehearts opened the scoring in the third inning, putting two runs on the board. Grafton native and Saint John’s alumni Andrew Eppinger (NJIT) opened up the inning by reaching on an error by Norwich’s shortstop. 

 

Eppinger advanced to second on a passed ball, then scored on a double by Duxburynative Buddy Mrowka (Northeastern). Mrowka advanced on a single by Sebastian Salado (Palm Beach Atlantic) and scored on a wild pitch.

 

Eppinger extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when he hit a home run to left-center field, scoring Matt Maloney (Dayton). In the fifth, Gavin Noriega(Marist) drove in Rico Riley (Jackson State) with a triple. Kenny Mallory 

 

Jr. (Vanderbilt) sent Noriega home with a single of his own and was driven in by a Maloney single, bringing the score to 7-0.

 

The scoring continued in the sixth after Salado drove in Randy Flores (Franklin Pierce). The game ended after a Noriega double brought in Michael Perales(Amherst) and Salado, driving the score to 10-0 and ending the 

 

game due to the league run rule.

 

Jimmy Wang (UConn) was on the hook for the loss for Norwich, pitching four innings in which he allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and onewalk, while striking out three.

 

Game 2 - Worcester 8, Norwich 3 (F/7)

 

After giving up three runs in the first inning, Bravehearts starter Alex Amalfi (UMass Boston) threw five no-hit innings while striking out a career-high 12Norwich batters, picking up the win.

 

Norwich got on the board early, scoring three runs on two hits, a walk, and a passed ball in the first inning. Worcester responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning after a single by Andover native Andrew Selima (Merrimack) drove in Lewis Barnum (Bryant) and Noriega. A fielder’s choiceoff the bat of Flores tied the game 3-3 in the second inning. Alex Neff (Dayton) gave the Bravehearts the lead in the third inning, driving a double to the center field fence, scoring Salado.

 

The Bravehearts sealed the win in the sixth inning. Walks to Christian Siciliano (Southern Maine), Salado, Selima, Jared Berardino (Assumption), andsingles by Perales and Lewis Barnum (Bryant) brought four runs in and made the score 8-3.

 

Norwich starter Eddie Kaftan (Mitchell) was given the loss after three innings in which he allowed four runs on six hits and three walks, while striking outtwo. Worcester returns to Fitton Field tomorrow, July 24th to face the Nashua Silver Knights at 6:30 p.m.
